Health and Safety Law says you must...

Display the statutory poster "Health & Safety Law - What you should know."

Have a written Safety Policy Statement if you employ 5 or more people.

Carry out assessments of the Health and Safety risks to your employees and others, and record them if you employ more than 5 people.

Ensure employees and others are aware of your emergency and evacuation procedures.

Consult with employees before making decisions that may effect their Health and Safety.

Keep records of injuries at work.

Report to the HSE certain types of injuries, diseases or dangerous occurences.

HSE: Are you property developing? 38 people died last year whilst working on construction refurbishment, repair and maintenance projects. A new HSE campaign kicked off on Monday 23 March 2009 targeting property developers with the aim of increasing their awareness of their responsibilities as construction clients under the Construction Design Management Regulations 2007. HSE: Fit3 worker involvement information published. New information on worker involvement has been added to the Fit3 site. Worker Involvement is an umbrella term used to describe a cooperative approach between employers and workers to the management of health and safety at work, it is a key goal within HSE’s new strategy. HSE: Tyre handling workshop information sheets published. These information sheets are based on those in pack that was available at the recent workshop. They also have worked examples of Manual Handling Assessment Charts (MACs), which were not in the pack. Find out more

HSE: 'Shattered Lives'. Raising awareness of workplace slips, trips and falls and how to easily prevent them in: Health, Education, Construction, Food retail, Food and drink manufacturing, Catering and Maintenance, Health Services and Education. The campaign launches interactive online tools to help you analyse and reduce risks. Find out more

HSE: The new Gas Safe Register opens. Last year, HSE announced changes to the gas installer registration scheme in Great Britain. The scheme currently operated by CORGI will be replaced on 1 April 2009 by the new Gas Safe Register (operated by Capita). The Gas Safe Register opened on Monday 19th January for currently registered gas installers to register in advance with new scheme. Find out more

HSE: The Health and Safety Offences Act 2008 now in force. The Health and Safety Offences Act 2008 comes into force on 16 January 2009. This new Act will increase penalties and provide courts with greater sentencing powers for those who break health and safety law.

HSE: Selecting protective gloves guidance updated. The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) essentials guidance sheet on selecting protective gloves has been updated. Download document (PDF)

NASC: A guide to good practice for scaffolding with tubes and fittings TG20:08 launched. After significant investment in both time and money the NASC (National Access and Scaffolding Confederation) has now launched the long awaiting guidance note TG20:08 - A Guide to good Practice for Scaffolding with Tubes and Fittings. Better Backs Campaign
From October this year the HSE will again be running a national campaign, called 'Better Backs', to tackle back pain in the workplace. More details here

Asbestos Regulations 2006
The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006 that come into force 13 November 2006 have been published. These reduce exposure limits and introduce mandatory training for work with asbestos. View the HSE press release here

HSE has set up a 'Watch your step' campaign, see HSE website for information for employers and employees. A new HSE leaflet 'Slips and trips: The importance of floor cleaning' has been published.
